What You Need to Know About Wind Damage to Your Roof

October 8, 2020 //  by hallmark

Weather events that include high winds can cause damage to your home. The roof is particularly susceptible, due to its position and the fact that so much surface area is exposed to the powerful forces of the wind. If you’ve been through a storm, you may be concerned that your roof has been damaged. To make an accurate determination, look for the following 3 signs of wind damage to roofs:

Leaks

If your roof starts leaking and it wasn’t before, the odds are pretty good that the windstorm did in fact do some damage. You’ll want to take a look at your roof from outside. Downed trees and debris from a windstorm can sometimes penetrate the roof and cause severe leaks. Other times, the leaks are caused by the wind damaging the shingles, flashing, or structure of the roof. You’ll want to call your homeowner’s insurance agent, take lots of pictures, and get in touch with the best roofing contractors in Burlington.

Shingle Damage

High winds can damage your shingles in a number of interesting ways. First and foremost, shingles can be removed entirely, which is an obvious and easy to spot problem. Other shingle issues include curling, which is most likely to occur the edges, corners, and angled portions of your roof. Lifted shingles can look like there’s nothing wrong with them, but on closer inspection, they’ve broken free from the adhesive below, which allows moisture to penetrate your roof and cause all kinds of problems.

Gutters & Flashing

While gutters and flashing aren’t always thought of as part of the roof, the truth is they play a vital role in keeping your home warm and dry. If the winds have caused the gutters to come out of position or dislodged the flashing – this is the flat metal that surrounds chimneys, downspouts, and other roof features – you’ll want to have your Burlington roofing contractor address it right away.
